There’s just something magical about a family session at the beach. The open space, the movement, the soft light—it all comes together to create images that feel relaxed, joyful, and full of life. If you’re planning a beach session, here are some simple ways to make the most of it and truly enjoy the experience.
Plan for the Evening Light
Evening is such a beautiful time to shoot. As the sun begins to set, it creates the most flattering golden light that feels soft and dreamy. It’s also a great time for families. No harsh midday sun, cooler temperatures, and a calmer atmosphere overall.

Come Ready to Have Fun
The best sessions happen when everyone shows up with a fun, easygoing attitude. Be ready to snuggle, play in the sand, look for rocks, and explore together. If you’re up for it, ending the session by splashing in the water is always a hit. Those carefree, joy-filled moments make for some of the most loved images.
Bring Snacks (and Make It Part of the Experience)
Little ones can get hungry quickly, so bringing water and a simple snack is always a good idea. Even better, turn it into part of your session. A cozy quilt, a mini picnic, and something like watermelon can create such sweet, summery moments while giving everyone a chance to pause and reset.

Beach Sessions Aren’t Just for Summer
One of the best things about beach sessions is how versatile they are. They’re perfect from spring all the way through late fall. Early spring brings fresh airy vibes, while fall sessions in jeans and cozy knits feel warm, relaxed, and incredibly beautiful.
Let Little Ones Be Little
Your kids don’t need to stand still and pose the whole time. I’ll always start with a few gentle prompts and walking shots, but once everyone warms up, we’ll lean into movement and play. Let them run, explore, and even get a little sandy. Those are the moments that truly reflect who they are.

Focus on Connection
The most meaningful photos come from connection, not perfection. Get close, play games, dance, run, give piggyback rides, and don’t be afraid to get down to their level. These are the moments your kids will remember and the ones you’ll want to hold onto.
Let Go of Expectations
Sometimes kids skip naps. Sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned. That’s okay. The best thing you can do is stay relaxed, keep smiling, and trust the process. There’s beauty in the in-between moments, and we’ll always make the most of whatever the session brings.

A Few Extra Tips to Make Your Session Even Better
Dress for movement and comfort
Flowy dresses, rolled-up pants, bare feet. Choose outfits that let you move easily and feel like yourselves.
Keep it simple
Avoid overpacking or overplanning. The beach already gives us a stunning natural backdrop.
Arrive a little early
Give your family a few minutes to settle in, explore, and ease into the environment before we start shooting.
Bring a towel and a change of clothes
Especially if you’re planning to end in the water. This makes the ride home much easier.

A beach session is about more than photos. It’s about slowing down, being together, and capturing your family just as you are in this season. The laughter, the sandy toes, the wind in your hair… those are the moments that matter most.
