Bringing your newborn home is one of the most special, fleeting seasons of life, and there’s something incredibly meaningful about documenting it right where your story is unfolding. An in-home newborn session allows you to capture those early days in a way that feels natural, relaxed and truly personal.
Here’s everything you need to know to feel prepared, confident and excited for your session.
Why Choose an In-Home Newborn Session?
Your home is where your family is most comfortable, and that comfort shows in your photos. There’s no rushing out the door, no packing up everything you might need for baby and no unfamiliar environment. Instead, you can settle in, take your time and simply enjoy the experience.
In-home sessions also create images that feel deeply personal. From the nursery you thoughtfully prepared to the cozy corners where you spend your days, these details become part of your story.

Natural Light is Everything
One of the most important elements of an in-home newborn session is natural daylight. I use soft window light to create bright, timeless images that feel warm and organic.
Before your session, take note of rooms in your home that receive the most light. Bedrooms and nurseries are always beautiful, but don’t overlook other areas. Open kitchens can be stunning, especially with clean lines and natural light. Beautiful staircases, hallways, or even a simple blank wall can work perfectly. I can do a lot with a clean, neutral space.
Don’t worry if your home doesn’t feel perfectly lit or “photo ready”. I will guide you and find the best spots as soon as I arrive.

Keep It Simple (and Don’t Stress About Cleaning Everything)
You don’t need to deep clean your entire home. Focus only on the areas we’ll be using, usually the primary bedroom, nursery and a living space.
A quick tidy-up goes a long way:
- Clear nightstands or dressers of clutter
- Make the bed with light or neutral bedding if possible
- Remove any distracting items from the background
Everything else can be left as is. This is real life, and your home does not need to look perfect.

Comfort is Key
One of the biggest advantages of being at home is that everything you need is right there. If baby needs to feed, change or be soothed, we can pause at any time.
To help the session flow smoothly, I recommend feeding your baby just before I arrive. A full, sleepy baby is usually more settled, allowing us to ease into those calm, snuggly moments.
That said, there is no pressure. Babies lead the session and we move at their pace.

Perfect for Siblings
In-home sessions are especially ideal for families with older children. Siblings can take breaks, play with their toys or relax in their own space when they need to.
This creates a much more enjoyable experience for everyone, and when they are ready, they can jump back in for those sweet, genuine interactions. Some of the most meaningful moments come from these in-between connections.

What to Wear
Keep outfits simple, soft and neutral. Think creams, whites, light blues and gentle earthy tones. Avoid anything bold or heavily patterned, as it can be distracting and even cast colour onto skin tones in your images.
For baby, a neutral swaddle or a simple knit outfit works beautifully and keeps the focus on those tiny features.
For moms, a flowy dress is always a beautiful option, but if you’re drawn to a more relaxed and cozy look, a pair of jeans with a flowy top or a simple t-shirt works just as well.
For dads, keep it classic and simple. A neutral t-shirt, a henley, or a button-down shirt paired with jeans or khakis photographs perfectly.
The goal is to keep the focus on your connection, not the clothing.

Trust the Process
You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do. I will gently guide you while also allowing space for natural moments to unfold.
Some of the most beautiful images come from simply holding your baby, snuggling on the bed or standing together in a softly lit space.
These Moments Go By Quickly
Those early newborn days are a blur. Soft, quiet, emotional and gone before you know it. An in-home session preserves not just how it looked, but how it felt to be there.
Your baby in your arms. Tiny stretches and sleepy yawns. The way your family settles into this new chapter, right at home.
